  Belgrade fortress

The Belgrade Fortress is the oldest preserved monumental complex in Belgrade. It is only partly preserved, namely preserved are only the parts built in 18th century over the old fortress. The new fortress was designed by the military engineer Nocola Doxat de Morez who used Voban's fortification concepts. The present looks of the fortress originate from the Turkish rule, at end of 18th century. The Turks called this part of the city "fecir bajir" which means "the hill for thinking", while a part of the complex was called Kalemegdan, a bare city space. Only when the fortress was given to Princ Mihailo, the planting of trees begun. Many monuments, mostly to writers and artists are situated in the present park. There are two museums in the fortress, as well. The Nature Study Museum Gallery and the Military Museum founded in 1878 and situated on the plateau above the West Bastion.
Sahat kula (Clock Tower) and Sahat kapija (Clock Gate) were built in 18th century, during the Austrian occupation. They lean upon the medieval wall of the uptown. Big or Roman Well was reconstructed to the present appearance during the Austrian rule. Its diameter is 3,5 meters. It was reconstructed using bricks according to the plans by Engineer Nicola Doxat.
One of Belgrade symbols is the Statue of victor, the work of sculptor Ivan Mestrovich. It was erected on the fortress in 1928 in honour of the tenth aniversary of the Salonika Front breach. The sculpture used to be a part of the monumental composition which should have been placed on Terazije, but it has never been erected as whole.
The model of the city of Despot Stephan Lazarevich is situated in the immediate vicinity of Victor. Despot Stephan Lazarevich proclaimed Belgrade the capital in 1403 and it became a center of the cultural and economic life of the time. Despot built his castle in the Uptown, while the city settlement with an administration, hospital, and shelter for foreigners, was built in the Downtown.
One of the most authentic parts of the Fortress are Despot's Gate and Dizdrar's Tower built in 15th century. The temple of the Most Holy Mother of God Birth, the Ruzica Church, is also worth mentioning. At the spot with the spring of water which is considered miraculous, the Chappel of Saint Petka was built. According to the legend, in the time of Serbian Despot rule there was a small church with the relics of the female saint Petka, the cult of whom was honoured ever since 1398. Princess Militza has moved the relics of the saint from Trnovo to Krusevac. Despot Stephan moved them to Belgrade.
