The museum of a rich tradition and experience and one of the national museum institutions of the longest continual existence. Founded in 1895 as the Natural History Museum of the Serbian Country, and since 1904 there has been a permanent exhibition. In 1958 the Museum get this present name. The basic museum activity is protection of movable natural resources. It has a good world reputation, particularly for its collections and several hundreds of holotypes, the type specimens used as the basis of the original published description of a taxonomic group, variety or form. The Natural History Museum Gallery organises case study exhibitions, photograph exhibitions and nature inspired fine arts exhibitions, as well as book promotions, panels and conferences.
