European Heritage Days 2004 Celebration Program
Sokobanja – on Water for Centuries

The project realization will include the Mitropolit Mihajlo Elementary School pupils, the Bucko Pre-School Institution, Radio Sokobanja, TV Soko, the Sokobanja Tourist Sport and Culture Organization, the Sokobanja High School Department for Tourism students, while the greatest part of the project will be completed by the members of the Ripaljka Ecologic Movement. The importance of water as the source of life will be treated in various ways interesting for the guests and locals, and structures made by humans for their survival along the water sources will be presented and their significance stressed.

Since this day, until the end of September, the European Heritage Days flags will be raised and the posters with the slogan and symbols posted on the following Sokobanja official buidings: the Sokobanja Municipality Assembly, the Home Museum, the Mitropolit Mihailo Elementary School, the Branislav Nusic School for Electrical Engineering.
The history classes in elementary and secondary schools will be devoted this Monday to European Heritage Days, to historical monuments of Sokobanja, the Sokobanja Hamam and Sokograd Fortress.

The elementary school pupils will devote the classes of fine arts and music to the theme: Sokobanja - on Water for Centuries.

At 10.00 a group of children starts form the Bucko Pre-Shool Institution carrying EHD banners, and goes to Turkish Bath in the city centre where they will be given a lesson on this historical monument by a tourist guide. The chldren will then draw and paint their impressions during the fine arts class. The works will be exhibited the same day in the Milun Mitrovic Gallery-Legacy in Sokobanja, which will be open for visits.

The Mitropolit Mihailo Elementary School pupils exhibition will be opened in the School Exhibition Hall and a lecture on the theme: Sokobanja - on Water for Centuries will be delivered. This exhibition will also be opened for all visitors and guests of the Sokobanja Spa.

Thursday, 09.16,.2004

Radio Sokobanja and TV Soko will start with a strong campaign for the European Heritage Days popularization even before the Days start. The program on Thursday, beside reporting on the project realization in the news, will include a Round Table on the subject in the local TV studio which will gather together experts, historians, and local politicians.

CENTRAL CELEBRATION

The presentation of Turkish Bath – Hamam in the Sokobanja Center. This object is not opened for visitors during the year. It is available only for the tourists who use the thermomineral water for their therapy. The Ripaljka Ecologic Society members (age 7 – 15) dressed in t-shirts with the EHD logo, will take tourists to the bath at 16.00 to show them this monument and present its history. The bricks from the Roman structure foundation and the ceramic pipes from the Turkish pipelane will be exhiited in the Amphitheater in front of the Bath.

A file with Skobanja and European Heritage Days flags will start at 17.00 toward Lepterija (the most beautiful excursion spot near Sokobanja and an area rich with mineral water streams; and for Sokograd, a medieval fotress on the left bank of the Moravica. Along the way,which leds by the Moravica River bed, the memebers of the Ecologic Movement, standing at the points placed along the way, will demonstrate to the visitors the importance of the evironment and cultural heritage preservation, especially the preservation of water.

At 17.30,in Lepterija, a theartical performance called "The Legend on the Sokobanja Origin", prepared by the Sokobanja Student Theatre, will be organized. The tourists and participants will be offered refreshments prepared of queen cell and healing water. The Ecologic Movement memebers will recite the hymn especially written for this day.

The participants will wear t-shirts with the European Heritage Days logo, distribute pamflets and fliers which present Hammam, Sokograd, and EHD logo. The main poster (the front page of the Project) also has the EHD logo on it.

The visit for Sokograd is planned for Sunday. The guides and an archeologist will talk about the old fortress.
