The Museum of Vuk and Dositej
was established in 1949. Ever since 1979 it has
been a part of the National Museum. The base for
its foundation was the legacy of Vuk Karadzich
which his daughter Mina presented to the Kingdom
of Serbia in 1984. The archive documents within
this collection were given to the Serbian Academy
of Science, while the pictures and Vuk Karadzich's
personal belongings were given to the National
Museum which formed a special exhibit, so called
Vuk's Room. This exhibition was enlarged by another
one related to Dositej Obradovich, another great
Serbian educator and Vuk's predecessor in the
struggle for introducing the vernacular into Serbian
literature.
The Museum is situated in Jevremova Street
21, the oldest preserved residential
building in Belgrade, the building where the first
Serbian High School, founded by Dositej Obradovic,
used to be. One of the first students was Vuk
Karadzich.
The Museum collection has about 8.000 objects,
and a library with 5.000 books. The exhibition
space is 180 m2. The Museum has a publishing department.
It publishes the yearly "Kovcežic" ("A
Small Chest").
