  Roman well

This is one of the places which has been veiled with mystery for decades and has been arousing a great curiosity.

Many different stories are related to the time of its origin: some claim that it was constructed in Roman times, the others that it existed in the Despot Stefan Lazarevic's time, and there are many stories about the destinies of people who died in it.

The truth is that it is not Roman, nor it is a well.
It was constructed by the Austrians when they overtook Belgrade from the Turks in 1717. When reconstructing the Fortress, the Austrians constructed two most important structures for a fortress: a powder magazine and a large well for water supply.

The well was completed in 1731. It was 60,15 m. deep and was 13 meters lower than the Sava River level. Two spiral starways lead around the well walls to the depth of 35,30 meters.

Ever since it was constructed, the well has actually been used as a water cistern since it is, by its largest part, digged into a limestone and does not cut any water source.
