It was founded in 1844 at the Jovan Sterija Popovic
initiative, who was a Minister of Education in the Serbian
Principality Ministry. As the oldest museum institution
it ranks among the most significant cultural institutions
in Serbia. It changed its name several times, and since
1952 bears its original name. The Museum's integral
parts are the Vuk and Dositej Museum, the Fresco Gallery,
lepenski vir and the Djerdap Archaeological Museum.
It covers 4,600 m? of exhibition area and up to 300,000
objects sorted in 27 museum collections. It is housed
in the building erected in 1903 according to the architects
Andra Stevanovic's and Nikola Nestorovic's design. Originally
it used to be the Funding Management Bank.
